Biography

Ton van Zantvoort was born in a small village in the southern Netherlands in 1979. After he succesfully finished in only three years his graphic design education, he graduated with credits in 2003 at the Academie St. Joost in Breda. With his graduate film “Khamu Village” he got in the “top 10 of best student films” on the Dutch Film Festival. Also his short series of “Items” about the abalienation of and the contrasts in the reality were screened on several big international film and art festivals.

In 2005 he was five months in South America to make a triptych of films. The longest of the three independent films is 'GRITO de PIEDRA' and was world premiered on IDFA 2006. The film screened on many international festivals and was broadcasted by b
ig channels, as ARTE (France, Germany, Switserland & Belgium). In that same year he was also nominated for the NFTVM award: the award for best new Dutch filmmaker.

In 2009 he finished his second feature documentary
'a BLOOMING BUSINESS' that became a coproduction with the VPRO. The film
screened on more than 70 international film festivals and won also many awards such as the Dok Leipzig Healthy Workplaces Film Award (Germany) , Cinema Planeta jury award (Mexico), FICA press award (Brasil), Millenium Festival Audience Award (Belgium).

In the last 8 years he made dozens of short (art) films, teached on several Art academies and was jurymember for international film festivals, and for organisations as Panasonic International.

Ton van Zantvoort

About the director (52 words)
Ton van Zantvoort observes with great attention and takes us into a world of people on the edge, people who try to survive but are confronted by external powers as tourism, international commerce and mass communication. With great humanity, van Zantvoort shows us a different world in which all human life is valuable.

NFTVM Award Jury report (74 words)
With cinematic and visual means Ton van Zantvoort creates a magnificent endresult. He even succeeds in difficult circumstances to make beautifull, well measured images with gorgeous lighting. His work testifies of historical consciousness and great respect for his characters. With an observational camera handling -in a beautiful ambience- he succeeds to get very close to his characters. To make such high quality work, in such a short time after graduating compels admiration and respect.

Panasonic International (107 words)
Independent filmmaker is only half the description of what Ton van Zantvoort actually does. His films are typified by the language of intimate images, a poetic structure and enormous involvement. Van Zantvoort observes with great attention and takes us into a world of people who try to survive but are confronted by external powers as tourism, international commerce and mass communication. In his seven years of making films and art, the Dutch born director and cameraman has screened his works at hundreds film festivals around the world, has been awarded and nominated 14 times and has taught and written on photography and documentary making in various institutions.

René Bosma, Deputy Director, Art Academie St. Joost, Breda (136 words)
Ton van Zantvoort is an independent filmmaker and takes the initiative to produce a film in accordance with his own interest. His way of producing seems to be connected with direct cinema; direct observations with minimum external interference and control over virtually the entire process of making a film. However, in Tonís films, you will notice that the preference lies in styling and emphasizing the layout of image and sound. This makes his work original and bears witness, content wise, to the enormous willpower of the maker. Throughout his films, Ton consciously lays down his statement, through which he creates his own vision of reality. The vision of a western civilized person who makes us do some soul searching. Some confronting soul searching, yet making it a process you want to endure as long as possible.
